一般的なフロー コンテナ、または DL 要素内の名前‐値グループのためのコンテナ。
フロー内容が期待される場所。
DL 要素の子として。
要素が DL 要素の子である場合： 1つ以上の DT 要素の後に 1 つ以上の DD 要素が続き、必要に応じてスクリプト サポート要素と混在する。
要素が DL 要素の子でない場合： フロー内容。
どちらのタグも省略不可。
一切特別な意味を持たない。この要素は、要素の子を表す。この要素は、class、lang 属性、および連続した要素のグループに共通のセマンティックスをマークアップする title 属性とともに使用できる。DT 要素と DD 要素のグループを包む、DL 要素でも使用できる。
たとえば、ブログの投稿は ARTICLE、章に SECTION、ページのナビゲーションの目的に NAV、フォームコントロールのグループに FIELDSET 要素を使用してマークアップされるだろう。
一方、DIV 要素は、文体上の目的のため、すなわち類似の方法で注釈をつけたすべてのセクション内の複数段落を包むために有用であるかもしれない。次の例は、別々な2つの段落要素に言語の設定を一度に設定する代わりに、一度に 2 つの段落の言語を設定する方法として使用される DIV 要素である：
